37. Australian road trip – from Sydney to Melbourne

- Australia! The country of our craziest dreams! Who never did consider to take his surfboard and join the dolphins on a large and deserted beach of Australia?
- First essential element to travel on this continent: the van. Our well-equipped Toyota Tarago has been purchased for this purpose to transport us through the east coast of the country. This van was our kitchen and our housing.
- We bought the van in Sydney in four days of research. We took it in hand and got used to the Left-Hand Drive during the return to National Park Blue Mountains (see Article 36). And here we go for a road trip between Sydney and Melbourne:
- We immediately took the Prince's Highway to the south. We decided to make a first stop on the coast at Bombo Beach.
- Due to the waves coming from the high sea, pitfalls are dangerous. The city therefore provides an outdoor pool in juxtaposition to the ocean.
- On the road to the beaches, wholesale birds haunted the ports: pelicans. Because of their red washed beak, we wondered if they were real.
- That day, there was no whale in the Batesman Bay. We just enjoyed a good swim on a beach almost deserted.
- This lizard is a goanna. They live generally in the forests but we can find them on near this beach too, sunbathing. Goannas lay their eggs in termite mounds to protect those from predators.
- We found also there plenty of molluscs, aquatic plants and other marine animals. Guess who picked up the most of pearly shells!
- And the show climax: a group of kangaroos came and tried to catch the sandwiches of the tourists. We catch this opportunity to take many crazy photos with them.
- Nice evening in the woods around the Brou Lake. We were although installed when suddenly...
- A thief bird tried to swipe a piece of fried pepper. For its trial, it received a stove shot - a reflex of Benoît. It is said that in Australia we must be wary of dangerous animals, but I would rather say animals should be wary of dangerous Benoît. Dedication to the survivor koala.
- And during the evening, we improvised a small shipping night to chase after the not-so-discrete kangaroos. In the night, chasing in the scrubs, we ate more cobwebs than we found kangaroos.
- Fortunately, when we returned to the camp, sweating and panting, we got finally our hunting trophy thanks to this rodent.
- Going to the beach and admiring Australian surfers - not as talented as in movies. This is our cinema!
- Enjoying a lunch break in the rocks in front of the ocean's view. Staring at the ripples that featured the seaside... What a good life!
- Eden. We learned there the principles of whaling, that was practiced here, like the traditional cooperation between killer whales and humans to catch the bulk mammal. But we saw neither hunters nor whales...
- And what about all the sunsets we witnessed during that trip... when the gradient of light rays reflected on a lake, we contemplated blissfully this masterpiece of mother nature.
- We finally arrived in Melbourne. We took there a simple day of visit before taking the seaside road towards the Great Ocean Road.
- Let's describe this road simply. The Great Ocean Road is built on the coastal rocks emerging from the ocean. This road is full of curves and of scenic points on the ocean and beaches. It is an intense attraction giving us the opportunity to admire the cliffs of pink sandstone slowly being gnawed by the ocean.
- Amazing landscapes came one after another. We mustn't miss a turn otherwise it is the great diving!
- Lunch break near a lake and a beach.
- Sometimes, we surprisingly found sights away from the road like this cave with disconcerting motifs lined with waterfalls.
- Beaches just waiting for us. We started to get used to stay alone on these heavenly beaches. It was so good!
- But it was time to return inside the land, to find the nature during the evening. The Lake Elizabeth is a mark of platypus. We stayed on the lookout in the shadow of the evening. Unfortunately we didn't see any.
- And koalas are so funny! They are so slow, that we lose quickly patience facing them. They stare haggardly at us and when they are not sleeping... they are constantly drugged by eucalyptus, their main food.
